Sri Vijaya Puram: The Transformation of Port Blair

Port Blair, the lively capital of the Andaman &  Nicobar Islands, has been rechristened Sri vijaya Puram in honour of the ancient Srivijaya Empire. This empire, a formidable maritime and trading kingdom, once streched across southeast Asia, fostering economic and cultural exchange throughtout the Indian Ocean. the new name, Sri Vijaya Puram, seeks to reconnect Port Blair with its rich heritage as a gateway for maritime trade, acknowledging the influence of the historical era on the region's development. By adopting this name, the government honours a time when india was a powerful force in the Indo-Pacific region, celebrating an era of unity, exchange, and prosperity.

Cellular Jail

This three-storeyed prison, constructed by Britishers in 1906, is a pilgrimage destination for freedom fighters. This colossal edifice has mutely witnessed the most treacherous of inhumane atrocities borne by the convicts, who were mostly freedom fighters. Now dedicated to the nation as a National Memorial. The saga of the heroic freedom struggle is brought alive in a moving Son-et-Lumiere, shown daily inside the jail compound at 6.00 PM (Hindi) and 7.15 PM (English). Also there is a Museum, an Art gallery, and a Photo gallery, which are open on all days except Monday from 9.00 AM to 12 Noon and 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM.

Corbyns Cove

Corbyn's Cove, located just a few kilometres south of Sri Vijaya Puram, is one of the most picturesque beaches in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This crescent-shaped cove, fringed by lush coconut palms, offers a breathtaking view of the turquoise waters of the Bay of Bengal. There are many water sports activities to be done in Corbyn's cove including Jet Ski and speed boat rides. The best thing to do here is Parasailing and SeaKart. When you fly in the air, you get to see the most beautiful view of the ocean under you. This is a must-do activity in Corbyn's cove.

Chidiatapu

Chidiyatapu, located on the southernmost tip of South Andaman Island, is a popular tourist destination in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, primarily known as "Bird Island" due to its rich variety of bird species and stunning sunset views; it features a biological park, a scenic beach, and is a great spot for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts to experience the island's diverse wildlife.

Flag Point

Located in the heart of Port Blair, this iconic landmark showcases the Indian tricolor flag fluttering against the azure sky, evoking a sense of patriotism and honor. Visitors to Flag Point can experience a profound sense of connection with their country as they witness the flag's majestic unfurling each day.

Marina Park

Just adjacent to the Water Sports Complex is the new amusement park offering rides for children and adults like: giant wheels, paratrooper and dragon coaster. There is also a miniature botanical garden and a statue of Netaji Subhas Bose here.

Mahatma Gandhi National Park

The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor is at a distance of 29 Kms. from Port Blair covering an area of 281.5 Sq.Kms. This Marine Park made-up of open sea, creeks and 15 small and large islands, is one of the best found anywhere in the world. Viewing of rare corals and underwater marine life through glass bottom boats.

Wandoor

west of Port Blair is the famous Wandoor beach known for scenic beauty and is very popular amongst tourists. The range of the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is just across Wandoor Beach. To visit the Marine National Park, boats are available from Wandoor Jetty.
